Year 3

Welcome to Year 3!

Throughout the term, we are continuing to try to become more like our Captains – Captain Reciprocity, Captain Reflective, Captain Resilience and Captain Resourceful. This half term we are trying to be more awesome like Captain Resilient. We are going to concentrate on becoming engrossed and enjoying our learning, managing our distractions, not giving up when things are tricky and taking responsibility for myself.

Our topic this half term is, ‘Myths and Legends’ and we will be focusing on The Ancient Greeks, Ancient Egypt, Robin Hood and other familiar myths and legends.

Important Notices:

  • We will be doing PE on a Monday and Tuesday – please make sure PE kit is in school EVERY DAY
  • Please make sure that reading books and diaries are in school EVERY DAY.

We will also be practicing for our Year 3&4 play, which we will be performing before the Easter holidays.

English:

In English this half term, we will be starting with narrative writing based around the myth ‘The Quest of Perseus and Medusa’ and within this we will be writing character and setting descriptions. We will be using our writing toolkits to help us with our writing and always aiming high with our vocabulary choices. We are then going to move onto writing diary entries and a project all about the Egyptians.

To help your child at home:

  • Read with them at least 3 times a week
  • You could ask your child about the features of our writing tool kits for the different pieces of writing we do.
  • Practice your child’s spellings at home, asking them about the rules and the meaning of the words.

Maths:

In maths this half term, we will be focusing on multiplication and division, using formal written methods and partitioning. We will then be moving onto length and mass, where we will be encouraging the children to measure and weigh different objects.

The children will also be completing weekly Superhero Times-table tests.

To help your child at home:

  • You could practice the 3, 4 and 8 times-tables.
  • You could count in hundreds, tens and ones, from different starting points.
  • You could practice the formal written methods of addition and subtraction.

Science:

In science this half term, we will be looking at the human skeleton, muscles and circulatory system and learning which types of food we need to stay healthy. This will be linked to the PE sessions that are led by Notts County Football Club.

The children will also be taking part in a Science Crest Award, where they will complete different challenges throughout the year.

To help your child at home:

  • You could ask your child to explain how our heartrate changes during exercise.
  • You could ask your child to name some of the bones that make up our skeleton.
  • You could discuss why it is important to exercise and stay healthy.

Topic:

Throughout the half term, in history, we will be learning about the Ancient Greeks and how their lifestyles influenced our lives today. In art, the children will be developing their techniques and their awareness of different types of art using a range of different materials. We will begin by looking at mosaics and Greek pottery. In PE, the children will take part in a weekly session led by a coach from Notts County Football Club and another weekly session led by a team from Nottingham Trent University. In the classroom, we will be doing lots of work around citizenship and learning how to hold a debate, listening and talking in a respectful way.
