Year 2

 Welcome to Year 2!

Throughout the year, we are trying to become more like our Captains – Captain Reciprocity, Captain Reflective, Captain Resilience and Captain Resourceful. This half term we are trying to be more awesome like Captain Resilience; we are working hard on managing our distractions so that we can set learning goals and work towards them. 

  • P.E is on Wednesdays and we have rugby on Thursdays (for this half term) - please make sure your child has their P.E kit in school every day (as P.E. sessions may change days) P.E. kits include a t-shirt, a pair of shorts or jogging bottoms and a pair of trainers or plimsols.  Please ensure that children do not have any earings in or jewellery on.
  • Please make sure you read with your child (and write it in their reading diaries) at least 3 times a week- this is an important part of their reading development. 
  • Please make sure your child has their book bag and their book in school every day.
  • Please remember to check our class notice boards for any other information and to see what your child is learning in class.


In English, we have started the year by looking at ‘The Elves and the Shoemakers, a traditional tale all about some Elves who help some shoemakers to make some shoes.  We were lucky enough to see a show of ‘The Elves and the Shoemakers’ and we used this as a basis for extended pieces of writing and designing our own shoe.  Our topic during Spring is ‘Into the Woods’, so later in the term we will move on to look at some different traditional tales (such as Goldilocks and Jack and the Beanstalk), exploring the different versions of these. We will be practicing our spellings in class weekly and these will also be sent home- please practice these at home with your child.  We will be practicing phonics and handwriting daily.  A big focus this year will be on our handwriting where we will be persevering with correct letter formation, working towards joining our letters in a cursive form.

You can help your child at home by:

  • Practice their spellings with them
  • Reading regularly and recording this in their reading dairies; remember, this could by anything and is not limited to their home reading book
  • Asking the children questions about what they have read, before during and after reading


In Mathematics, we will all be doing different challenges based around different ways to measure, such as mass, temperature, length and height.  The children will then need to use their reading skills to read word problems where they have to apply their number and calculation skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). The children will also be exploring different types of graphs and how to record and analyse data within these.  We will focus this year on using our mathematical knowledge to reason, thinking about different ways to solve problems and choosing the best and most efficient methods.  We encourage all children to practise telling the time throughout the school day as we will be learning to tell the time in 5 minute intervals.

You can help your child at home by:

  • Practising their two, five, ten and three times tables.
  • Asking them to measure things around the house using rulers, tape measures, a thermometer, weighing scales etc
  • Practise telling the time, talking about key vocabulary like minutes past and minutes to


In Science, we are exploring and investigating different materials.  We will be looking at what they are used for and their functionality in everyday life.  We will be looking at their properties and exploring how suitable they are for different purposes.  Throughout our science learning we will be using the following skills by working scientifically: predicting, investigating, conducting experiments, recording, questioning, analysing and concluding. 

You can help your child at home by:

  • Looking at different objects and asking your child what they are made from
  • Discussing why different objects are made from certain materials
  • Encouraging your child to ask different questions


Our topic for this half term is ‘Into the Woods.  In Art, we will be practicing our painting and printing skills by using natural objects from our outdoor environment.  In Geography, we will learn about different environments whilst looking and human and physical features and their purpose.  In P.E we will be taking part in rugby and hockey and the skills needed in these. We will be encouraging the children to play a range of different playground games. In our PSHE we are looking at how we can stay safe, both online and whilst we are out and about.  In Design and Technology, we will be investigating, designing, making and evaluating different structures such as the bridge from Billy Goat’s Gruff.
