Welcome to Year 5!
Throughout the term we will be aspiring to be like our school captains: resilient, reflective, resourceful and reciprocal. The values of these four captains are instilled into all that we do, and the children are encouraged to incorporate these traits in their learning.

All of our writing this term will be focused around the book Street Child, by Berlie Doherty. We will begin the year by writing character descriptions and a continuation of the narrative. After this, we will be researching and writing non-chronological reports about workhouses in the Victorian times. As the term progresses, we will be writing diary entries in character as Jim, the protagonist from the story, and informal and formal letters. We will be sending home 10 spellings home a week, based on spelling rules from the year 5 curriculum, which we will test every Thursday in class.
This term we will be focusing on place value in our maths lessons. We will begin by understand numbers up to 1 000 000 and spending time comparing and order them. After this, we will be learning about different number patterns and using our reasoning skills to explain how we can understand sequences. Later on in the term we will be practising addition and subtraction in numbers up to 1 000 000 and word problems. We will finish the term by learning about prime numbers and factors. We will be doing our Super Hero Times Table tests every Thursday afternoon.
In science we will be concentrating on asking scientific questions and conducting scientific research. Our topic is Earth and Space this term. We will begin by researching the planets and doing a presentation on them to the class. We will then be learning about the spherical bodies and movements on the planets. After this, we will investigate the movement on the moon by experimenting in groups. After this, we will be learning about the phases of the moon, using Oreo biscuits!
In year 5 our topic this term is The Victorians. We will start by doing a local study of Nottingham and comparing what it looked like the Victorian times and how it has changed. Then we will be researching and learning about Victorian chimney sweeps, and writing a recount as a Victorian chimney sweep. We will also be learning about Queen Victoria and creating a timeline of the British Monarchy. In art, we will be learning about William Morris and recreating artwork in a similar style to this. In our People and Communities lessons, we will be learning about Florence Nightingale and discussing how we can help people in our own lives. We will be doing PE twice a week as well as violin lessons once a week on a Tuesday afternoon.
