Welcome to Year 5!
Throughout the term, we will continue to aspire to be like our school captains: resilience, reflective, resourceful and reciprocal. The values of these four captains are instilled into all that we do, and the children are encouraged to incorporate these traits in their learning.
We will begin the term by writing a historical report based on effects of warfare in the Mayan times. Following this, we will be researching things that were introduced by the Mayans that are still currently used, and creating television reports based on this. We will also be writing descriptions of Mayan Gods to accompany our art work based on this. We will continue sending 10 spellings home a week for children to be tested on, with a focus on the year 5 & 6 spelling words this term.
In maths we will begin the term by learning translations and reflections. We will be completing activities where we have to translate or reflect a shape accurately onto a grid. After that, we will move onto a unit on converting measures, where will be converting units of length, mass and time. Following that, we will be learning how to find, measure and estimate the area and perimeter of a variety of shapes. Children will continue to be tested on their Superhero times tables once a week.
In science we will be concentrating on asking scientific questions and developing our skills in analysis and predicting the outcome of experiments. We will be setting up fair and comparative tests and analysing the data from them with diagrams, line graphs and tables. In addition to this, we will be presenting our findings from our experiments in a variety of ways, including presentations, posters and displays.
This term our topic in year 5 and 6 is The Mayans. We will begin by looking at life for rich and poor people in Mayan times. In art, we will be creating a depiction of a Mayan God, based on ones that we have learned about, as well as a study of the Mayan artist and architect, Stephen Catherwood. In geography, we will be identifying the locations that the Mayans lived on a map, and discussing important historical buildings that were built in the times of the Mayans. We will also be researching the different foods that were eaten in Mayan times, and comparing it to what we eat now. In history, we will be learning about the Mayan calendar, and creating our own versions.
