Welcome to Year 5!
Throughout the term, we will continue to aspire to be like our school captains: resilience, reflective, resourceful and reciprocal. The values of these four captains are instilled into all that we do, and the children are encouraged to incorporate these traits in their learning.
This term our writing will be centred around the Michael Morpurgo novel, ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’. We will begin by writing a descriptive piece of writing based on the setting of the novel, and as the term progresses we will be writing our own fictional stories based on the book. We will also be writing biographies based on famous explorers. Spelling, punctuation and grammar will be taught in our lessons in an interactive way, to help the children with all aspects of the writing curriculum. Spellings tests will continue to take place once a week, with 10 spellings being sent home weekly for children to practise at home.
In maths we will begin the term by learning about fractions, percentages and decimals. The children will begin by learning how to add and subtract fractions with different denominators, and then we will be finding fractions of amounts. After that, we will be focusing on converting from fractions to percentages and decimals. Later on in the term, we will move onto learning about angles. We will start by learning about the different types of angles and how to measure then, then we will be understanding how to measure angles within a triangle and then learning how to draw angles, and then solve problems involving these.
In science we will be learning about different materials and the properties of them. As well as conducting experiments to determine how different substances dissolve, we will also be learning about how mixtures can be separated using filtering, evaporating and sieving.
Our topic this term is storms and shipwrecks! In history, we will be learning all about The Titanic, and having our own debate about who was to blame for the ship sinking. In geography, we will be learning about the water cycle, and mapping the route of the Titanic before it sank. In P4C, we will be looking at class structures. During our art lessons we will be creating water colour paintings. Within our music lessons, we will be composing our own sea shanties, after studying some existing ones. We will also be taking part in weekly football coaching from Nottingham Forest football club, in addition to our weekly P.E lessons.
